Everyone knew when I stepped in town,
I was the greatest fighter around.
A lot of people called me a clown,
But I am the one who called the round.
The people came to see a great fight,
But all I did was put out the light.
Never put your money against Cassius Clay,
For you will never have a lucky day.
--Muhammad Ali
I’ve wrestled with alligators.
I’ve tussled with a whale.
I done handcuffed lightning.
And throw'd thunder in jail.
—Muhammad Ali
To make America the greatest is my goal
So I beat the Russian and I beat the Pole
And for the USA won the medal of gold.
The Greeks said you're better than the Cassius of old.
We like your name, we like your game.
So make Rome your home if you will.
I said I appreciate your kind hospitality,
But the USA is my country still,
’Cause they’re waiting to welcome me in Louisville.
--Muhammad Ali
Ali wrote all his poems in a journal. All his poems showed how great he was and what kind of person he was. Ali was looked up to by many people and was a big sports figure. In the first poem, he writes about his greatness first hand and that you should never bet against him in a fight. For example, he said, “i was the greatest fighter around.” However, many people would call him arrogant. Which he was but he was also confident, and to be great, you must be confident. In his next poem, he talks about his accomplishments figuratively. He says, “I’ve wrestled with alligators, I’ve tussled with a whale.” In this poem, he also shows a little more of his confidence because he really has accomplished things that ordinary people can only imagine. In the last poem, Ali talks about winning a gold medal for his country. And a gold medal is no small feat. He ended up winning a gold medal which shows how good he was as a boxer.
